Baby Safety – Hidden Danger of Your Baby Travel Stroller

Every year thousands of babies get hurt in accidents related to strollers. When new parents choose a stroller to buy they consider nice look and modern appearance of the stroller among other things. They often overlook a very important consideration – safety.

Last month I met my neighbor Jody, and she told me a terrible story of what happened with her little 6 month old baby boy. The end of story was good, but they had a very hard time before doctors said that their baby was going to be fine. What happened is that their brand new, stylish, easy to maneuver and handle lightweight travel stroller just got overturned by their 3 years old daughter. She was just trying to help… The baby was rushed to the Emergency Room, and luckily ended up with just two stitches.

A nurse told to Jody that the most important thing about any strollers is its safety, stability in particular. She gave Jody a good advice on baby safety topics. This is what we think is important with regard to different types of strollers: from umbrella strollers, travel strollers, jogging strollers, prams etc.:

-       Stroller should be safe. Always choose a carriage or stroller that has wide and stable base to prevent tipping.
-       Always choose five point harnesses rather then three.
-       Make sure that back recliner has lock that keeps its position in place to prevent baby falling backwards.
-       Buy preferably strollers with dual lock brake system.
-       Check for JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacture Association) Certification Seal on www.jpma.org.
-       Make sure it is easily, quickly open and close.
-       Check if stroller is roomy enough to accommodate your growing infant.
-       Be sure that stroller has durable wheels. Small swiveling wheels make easier to maneuver and good choice for walking on sidewalk. Larger wheels are easier to push over suburban sidewalk or forest path.
-       Stroller cover should be hypoallergenic and from safe fabric.
-       If you are looking for infant stroller, make sure it has 3 position tilt. Recommended that baby up to 6 month old lie on fully recline position.
-       Make sure stroller handle bar is comfortable and adjustable. It is important to have reversible handle bar to help parents make easy eye contact with baby.

Finally, never leave your child in a stroller unattended, even for a second. If you let your older kids to help to push the stroller – always be around and supervise them.

What to Look for in a Baby Stroller

If you get the wrong baby stroller for your personal lifestyle it could prove to be a costly mistake. Good baby strollers are quite an expensive purchase especially if you start looking at the initial investment for your newborn as one total outlay. Not only do you have to buy a baby stroller but there are all the other things you need such as a safety car seat, a crib and all the other nursery furniture, clothes, toys and nursery safety items such as a baby monitor, it all adds up.

The best bet is to make sure you get your baby purchases right first time, even if the cost of the baby stroller you really want is a bit more than you had originally intended to spend. A few dollars extra at the start is far better than having to fork out for another baby stroller when you find you have made the wrong choice.

As with everything baby, safety must come at the top of your stroller list. It’s advisable to buy a new baby stroller so that you can easily check that your baby stroller meets all the required safety standards.

A good baby stroller will have a five point harness but as a minimum you want a crotch strap to prevent your baby from slipping out from under the safety belt and the breaking system is important if you don’t want to find your baby making a run for it!

You will spend many hours pushing your baby stroller so check out the height of the handles, adjustable is best so that both mum and dad can comfortably push the baby stroller.

I don’t think you need reminding that babies make a lot of mess so only buy a baby stroller with washable fabric unless of course you can afford to consider your stroller as disposable.

Don’t forget that your baby won’t travel as light as you do, everywhere you go your changing bag, formula milk (if you are bottle feeding) and other necessary bits and pieces will follow, and somehow you have to carry the shopping as well, so make sure your stroller is sturdy enough to carry a bag or two on the handles and has plenty of storage underneath.

Where ever you go you need to be able to store your baby stroller, in the house, in the car or on the train so check out how easily your baby stroller folds away and if you are regularly out and about on public transport checking out lightweight strollers might be a good idea.

Standard strollers are generally more versatile. They are larger so offer your baby far more room and are designed with greater baby comfort in mind. Standard strollers also tend to have far more storage but it all comes at a cost, more weight and more bulk.

For the more active parents there is always the jogging stroller but this does tend to be for those that can stretch to a second stroller. Jogging strollers have all-terrain suspension systems and work well on most surfaces but they don’t fold as well as other strollers and they are not recommended for newborn babies.

For the regular traveller there is always the option of the complete travel system which incorporates the baby stroller and safety car seat all in one.

At the end of the day beyond the critical safety features which baby stroller you choose is totally down to lifestyle and personal choice. If you want to minimise the restrictions a newborn has on your life go for the stroller that best meets your everyday needs.

Baby Strollers – A Safe Carriage for Babies

A baby stroller or a buggy is a popular baby transport. It is generally used to carry a child of up to 3 years of age. In a stroller, the child sits in a manner that she or he does not faces the pusher. A perambulator or pram is used to carry new born babies. It has the infant lying down in it, facing the pusher. Prams were first used in the UK during the Victorian period. Later, a suspension mechanism was added to the baby carriage that made ride smooth both for the child and the parents.
A baby stroller is comparatively smaller in size and also costs less than a pram. A more compact form of buggy, called Pushchair was released in the UK during early 1980s. The carriage became an instant hit among the Britishers as it was made of a collapsible aluminum frame. A variety of strollers are also available in the markets that are used to carry twin babies or two babies of similar age.
Travel systems are the latest evolution of baby strollers. They typically consist of a chassis with a detachable carrycot or baby seat. It can be conveniently switched between a pram and a pushchair as per needs. Its baby seat allows undisturbed movement of the baby on to a car seat. It thus considerably reduces the chances of inadvertently waking up a sleeping baby while one moves her or him to a car seat. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN ECE) has categorized car seats into five mass groups. While the Group 0 seat can carry children of up to 10 kg, the Group 1 seats can carry children weighing 9 to 18 kg.
The latest versions of baby strollers are light weight and come equipped with swivel wheels for easy maneuvering. A number of retailers in the UK also sell buggies that can be customized according to the needs of the baby and the parents. Current strollers feature a number of baby safety designs like sun rider canopies, easy step-in rear stadium style seating and drink holders.

Baby Bath Safety

For any new parents the first few months after the arrival of the new addition to their family is going to be a challenge. Not only are they looking to make sure that their baby’s life is happy but also safe especially when bathing, changing and taking them out. When it comes to baby bath safety there are certain things that new parents need to do.

In this article we offer some guidelines to ensure that not only is the new parent’s baby’s bath time safe but also enjoyable.

Tip 1 – If you are intending to use your own bath for washing your baby in then it is a good idea to put a slip proof mat or even some towels into the bath on which your baby can be placed. But if you can afford to there are baby bath chairs that can be purchased which allow the baby to sit comfortably in the bath whilst being washed.

Tip 2 – To ensure that the temperature of the water is right for your baby not too hot or too cold there are several things as new parents that you can do. You can either test the temperature of the water using the traditional method of dipping your elbow or wrist into the water as your mother would have done. The other way is to purchase a special thermometer which changes colour when the water temperature is correct. These thermometers will turn red if water is too hot, blue if it is cold and green if the temperature is just right.

Tip 3 – When giving your baby a bath make sure that you only use products suited to them instead of the kinds you would use on yourself. Also when it comes to washing their hair it is a good idea to place a flannel over their eyes in order to prevent shampoo from getting in them.
