Discover The Increase In Baby Boomer Travel

December 11th, 2009 admin No comments

The baby boomers have made a lot of changes throughout history. It is estimated that 78 million people were born between the years of 1946 and 1964. As with everything else throughout the years they have made a huge impression on the travel industry. Traveling started to pick up as this generation began reaching adulthood. Baby boomer travel is increasing every year as this generation is reaching the age where they can get out more and do the things they always dreamed about. However, this generation of travelers is a little different than what the industry is use to dealing with.

Many changes have taken place with baby boomer travel mainly because of the way they view traveling. They consider it to be something they need to do instead of something they want to do. This makes the way they travel a lot different. For instance, they will travel for pleasure and business whether they can really afford to or not. Most of them will charge the expense of traveling on a credit card and figure out how to pay for it later. The previously generation would have never considered traveling with cash up front. The baby boomers also expect fast and convenient service even when they travel on a moments notice.

One of the major changes that have taken place with baby boomer travel is the fact that it is so common for them. They view traveling as a necessity and it has become second nature to them. The baby boomer generation needs to be relaxed and comfortable even when traveling so they expect to have all the modern day accommodations they are accustomed to. They want things fast and simple, which is why using the Internet to book flights and plan out trips is used so frequently. Since they travel so much they also look for more exotic and interesting places to travel.

Even though baby boomer travel is increasing every year they still want to have control over all the decisions that affect them personally. They want to have a selection when it comes to restaurants and they want to choose the activities they engage in. It is important for the travel industry to pay attention to the demands of this generation and take measures to give them what they are searching for. This is the only way they will be able to stay at the top of this industry and keep the baby boomer travel generation happy.

Why Coastal Vacations Directors are Targeting Baby Boomers

Baby Boomers are those born in an 18 year period after World War II: from 1945/1946 to 1964. They account for 29% of the total population in the USA.

Not only are they the first generation to think outside of the “work all your life for one company to receive the golden handshake” box, but most are changing their professions at least once along the way.

Over the next 10 years Baby Boomers are scheduled to retire at an unprecedented rate of about one per every 8 seconds. They are also expected to inherit a lot more money than their previous generation.

7.4 million Boomers own their own business. Their favorite activity is travel. As a group they continue to enjoy having the highest median household income of any group. They are entrepreneurial, in better health than previous generations and are staying active.

All major marketing trends have been fueled by the Baby Boomers size and buying power. For example: they were behind the growth in baby formula sales, behind the housing boom when they started to purchase their first homes and now travel is being affected by their enormous buying power.

It is projected that the travel industry will become a $14 Trillion dollar business worldwide by the year 2010.

Home business and travel is an ideal market for Baby Boomers who wish to stay active, earn extra money to supplement their lifestyles and travel at a discount.

Coastal Vacations directors are targeting Baby Boomers in the publications they read as well as in online advertising.

The number of Baby Boomers who have started their own business is up by 20% since the year 2000.

Online Habits of Baby Boomers

November 10th, 2009 admin No comments

It should come as no surprise to those in the age group that of the one-third of the 195.3 million internet users in the US, the 55+ age group represents the largest constituency (Jupiter Research). This demographic is generally cashed up and ready to spend online, yet the focus of online retailers continues to be a younger (and cash-poorer) age group.

Here are some sobering statistics:

* The most popular online activity of this age group is email, followed by web browsing, research and shopping (JWT Boom and ThirdAge).

* Over two-thirds of Americans in the 50-64 years age group use the internet (SeniorNet).

* Adults over 50 years of age spend an average of, wait for it, $7 billion online annually.

* When making a major purchase such as cars and appliances, the internet is the most important source of information for baby boomers (Zoomerang).

* Those aged 50-plus account for 80% of all luxury travel spending, and 42% of all travel purchases are made online (Pew Internet and American Life Project).

* Over 72 percent of baby boomers have broadband internet in their homes.

* At the end of 2007 mature social networkers are expected to top 20 million (Deloitte).

* 82 percent of adults aged over 50 used the internet to research health and wellness information.

Today’s Over 55s are generally healthier and wealthier than their parents, and are looking forward to active retirement years. They are happy to take on new challenges and to travel to exciting and exotic destinations.

Their use of the internet for research into just about every aspect of their lives is a growing trend and one which all internet marketers should acknowledge.
